Disaster Preparedness

Disaster preparedness is a set of actions taken to be ready for and respond to a disaster. This can include creating a plan, gathering supplies, and learning how to stay safe. 

Plan Create a family disaster plan and practice it, Decide how to reunite if separated, Identify your risk, Prepare your children, and Consider people with special needs. 

Supplies 

  • Have a disaster kit for your home and car
  • Include non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, batteries, and a radio
  • Have a first aid kit
  • Have seasonal clothing
  • Have sanitation supplies

Safety 

  • Learn first aid and CPR
  • Learn how to shut off gas, water, and electricity
  • Secure your home, including water heater, appliances, furniture, and hanging items
  • Make arrangements for pets

Evacuation Have a full tank of gas in your car, Make transportation arrangements, Listen to a battery-powered radio, and Follow local evacuation instructions. 

Community

  • Organize your neighborhood to be self-sufficient after a disaster 
  • Participate in community education to develop warning and evacuation plans
